Pictures courtesy of Seagate. A layer of carbon nanotubes was grown on a hard-disk drive surface in order to reduce friction. The question was how strong the nanotubes bonded with the surface. We were able to answer this question using our FMS-EM. A CNT was attached to the tip of the force sensor by EBID (Electron Beam Induced Deposition) and the force was measured as the tip was slowly lifted away from the surface.
